Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) System Check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Retrieve and record FREEZE FRAME and/or FAIL RECORDS data for each DTC set. Go to next step.
  2. Install Tech 2 scan tool. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, command EGR valve to zero, 20, 50, 70, 100 percent. If actual EGR position follows the desired EGR position, go to step  5. If not, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a test light connected to battery voltage, probe EGR valve harness connector ground circuit (Black wire). If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, go to step  7.
  4. Connect test light to ground. Probe EGR harness connector control circuit (White wire). Using scan tool, command EGR to 20, 50, 70, 100 percent. If test light flashes, maintains a steady glow or comes on and gets brighter as command is raised, go to step  6. If not, go to step  10.
  5. DTC P0404 is intermittent. If any additional DTCs are set, diagnose affected DTCs. If no additional DTCs are set, go see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  6. Turn ignition on. Using a test light connected to battery voltage, probe EGR valve ground circuit (Black wire) at EGR harness connector If test light comes on, go to step  9. If test light does not come on, go to step  8.
  7. Check for open or poor connection in EGR ground circuit (Black wire). Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  22. If circuit is okay, go to step  20.
  8. Check for open or poor connection in EGR power feed circuit (Red wire). Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  22. If circuit is okay, go to step  20.
  9. With test light still connected to ground, probe EGR signal circuit (Brown wire). If test light comes on, go to step  11. If test light does not come on, go to step  12.
  10. With test light still connected to ground, probe EGR power feed circuit without commanding EGR with scan tool. If test light comes on, go to step  13. If test light does not come on, go to step  14.
  11. Check EGR valve signal circuit (Brown wire) for short to voltage. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  22. If circuit is okay, go to step  20.
  12. Using a DVOM connected to ground, probe 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire). If voltage reading is about 5 volts, go to step  15. If voltage reading is not about 5 volts, go to step  16.
  13. Check EGR power feed circuit (Red wire) for short to voltage. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  22. If circuit is okay, go to step  20.
  14. Using a test light connected to battery voltage, probe EGR power feed circuit (Red wire) at EGR valve harness connector. If test light comes on, go to step  17. If test light does not come on, got to step  18.
  15. Check EGR sensor ground circuit (Black wire) for poor connection at EGR valve and repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  22. If circuit is okay, go to step  19.
  16. Check 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) for short to voltage and repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  22. If circuit is okay, go to step  20.
  17. Check EGR power feed circuit (Red wire) for short to ground. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  22. If circuit is okay, go to step  20.
  18. Check EGR valve power feed circuit for an open or poor connection at EGR harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  22. If circuit is okay, go to step  20.
  19. Replace EGR valve. After replacing EGR, go to step  22.
  20. Check for poor connection at VCM harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  22. If connection is okay, go to next step.
  21. Replace VCM. Program replacement VCM. See PROGRAMMING . After replacing VCM, go to next step.
  22. Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO function. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, then enter DTC P0404. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test RAN AND PASSED, go to next step. If scan tool did not indicate that this test RAN AND PASSED, repeat step  2.
  23. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTC(s) are displayed, go to applicable DTC test.
