Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) System Check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Retrieve and record FREEZE FRAME and/or FAIL RECORDS data for each DTC set. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Ensure Tech 2 scan tool is installed. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, read HO2S voltage. If voltage gradually decreases 0.15 volt, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If voltage does not decrease, go to next step.
    NOTE: If engine has been operating, allow engine to cool for about one hour before proceeding with tests.
  3. Check ENG 1 fuse (10-amp) located in underhood bussed electrical center. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is faulty, go to step  12.
  4. Disconnect HO2S harness connector. Connect a test light between chassis ground and ignition feed circuit (Pink wire) at HO2S harness connector. If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, go to step  7.
  5. Connect test light between ignition feed circuit (Pink wire) and HO2S heater ground circuit (Black wire) at HO2S harness connector. If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, go to step  8.
  6. Allow HO2S to cool for about 10 minutes. With HO2S still disconnected, measure resistance between ignition feed circuit (Pink wire) and HO2S heater ground at HO2S pigtail connector. If resistance is 3-10 ohms, go to step  9. If resistance is not 3-10 ohms, go to step  11.
  7. Check for open HO2S harness connector ignition feed circuit (Pink wire). After repair, go to step  14.
  8. Repair open HO2S heater ground circuit (Black wire). After repair, go to step  14.
  9. Check HO2S harness connector for faulty connection(s). If faulty connection is found, go to step  14. If connection is okay, go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition off. Disconnect VCM harness connectors. Using DVOM, measure resistance between HO2S signal circuit (Tan wire) and HO2S low circuit (Purple wire) at harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, go to step  13. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  11. Replace HO2S. After replacing sensor, go to step  14.
  12. Repair short to ground in HO2S ignition feed circuit (Pink wire). After repair, replace ENG 1 fuse and go to step  14.
  13. Repair open or poor connection(s) in HO2S signal circuit (Tan wire) and/or HO2S low circuit (Purple wire). After repair, go to next step.
  14. If engine has been running, allow to cool for about one half hour. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO function. Monitor HO2S voltage. If voltage displayed gradually decreases 0.15 volts, go to next step. If voltage does not decrease as specified, go to step  12.
  15. Using scan tool, select Read and Record INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, diagnose affected DTCs. If no DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
