DTC P1162 (D16Y5 M/T): Primary Heated Oxygen Sensor-1 (Ho2S-1) Circuit Malfunction
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Honda Civic. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
If DTC P1167 is set when DTC P1162 is set, trouble shoot DTC P1162 first.
- Perform PCM reset procedure. See PCM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING DTCS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Start engine and wait at least 2 minutes. If DTC P1162 is indicated, go to step 3. If DTC P1162 is not indicated, test drive vehicle for several miles with transmission in 3rd gear and engine speed at 1500 RPM. If DTC P1162 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC P1162 is not indicated, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. Check for poor connections or loose wires between HO2S-1 connector and PCM 31-pin connector "C". See Figure. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 31-pin connector "C". Disconnect HO2S-1, 8-pin connector. Check for continuity in Black wire between HO2S-1 harness connector terminal No. 7 and PCM 31-pin connector "C" terminal No. 23. See Figure and Fig 1 . If continuity does not exist, check for open in Black wire between HO2S-1 and PCM 31-pin connector "C". See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If continuity exists, check for poor connections or loose wires at HO2S-1 and PCM connectors. If connections and wires are okay, replace HO2S-1.
- Turn ignition off. Turn ignition back on. Using backprobe set, measure voltage between PCM 31-pin connector "C" terminal No. 24 (Red wire) and PCM 16-pin connector "D" terminal No. 11 (Green/Black wire). See Figure and Figure . If more than 0.5 volt exists, go to step 6. If 0.5 volt or less exists, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 31-pin connector "C". Check for continuity between ground and PCM 31-pin harness connector "C" terminal No. 24 (Red wire). See Figure. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check for open in Red wire between PCM 31-pin connector "C" and HO2S-1. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If Red wire is okay, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.
- Disconnect HO2S-1, 8-pin connector. Check for continuity between ground and PCM 31-pin harness connector "C" terminal No. 24 (Red wire). See Figure. If continuity does not exist, replace HO2S-1. If continuity exists, check for short in Red wire between PCM 31-pin connector "C" and HO2S-1. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Using backprobe set, measure voltage between PCM 31-pin connector "C" terminal No. 25 (White wire) and PCM 16-pin connector "D" terminal No. 11 (Green/Black wire). See Figure and Figure . If 0.5 volt or less exists, go to next step. If more than 0.5 volt exists, go to step 9.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 31-pin connector "C". Check for continuity between ground and PCM 31-pin harness connector "C" terminal No. 25 (White wire). See Figure. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.
- Disconnect HO2S-1, 8-pin connector. Check for continuity between ground and PCM 31-pin harness connector "C" terminal No. 25 (White wire). See Figure. If continuity does not exist, replace HO2S-1. If continuity exists, check for short in White wire between PCM 31-pin connector "C" and HO2S-1. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- If more than 5.0 volts exists, go to next step. If 5.0 volts or less exists, turn ignition off and disconnect HO2S-1, 8-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Using backprobe set, measure voltage between PCM 31-pin connector "C" terminal No. 25 (White wire) and PCM 16-pin connector "D" terminal No. 11 (Green/Black wire). If more than 5.0 volts exists, replace HO2S-1. If 5.0 volts or less exists, substitute a known good PCM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original PCM.
- Start engine and run at 3000 RPM with no loads and transmission in Park or Neutral until radiator fan comes on. Allow engine to idle. Using backprobe set, measure voltage between PCM 31-pin connector "C" terminals No. 24 (Red wire) and PCM 16-pin connector "D" terminal No. 11 (Green/Black wire). See Figure and Figure . If 2.6-2.8 volts exists, go to step 12. If 2.6-2.8 volts does not exist, go to next step.
- Using backprobe set, measure voltage between PCM 31-pin connector "C" terminal No. 25 (White wire) and PCM 16-pin connector "D" terminal No. 11 (Green/Black wire). If less than 2.8 volts exists, replace HO2S-1. If 2.8 volts or more exists, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.
- Using backprobe set, measure voltage between PCM 31-pin connector "C" terminal No. 23 (Black wire) and PCM 16-pin connector "D" terminal No. 11 (Green/Black wire). If 0.4 volt or less exists, go to next step. If more than 0.4 volt exists, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 31-pin connector "C". Check for continuity between ground and PCM 31-pin harness connector "C" terminal No. 23 (Black wire). If continuity exists, go to step 15. If continuity does not exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect HO2S-1, 8-pin connector. Check for continuity between PCM 31-pin harness connector "C" terminal No. 23 (Black wire) and HO2S-1, 8-pin harness connector terminal No. 7 (Black wire). See Figure and Fig 1 . If continuity does not exist, check for open in Black wire between PCM 31-pin connector "C" and HO2S-1. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If continuity exists, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.
- Disconnect HO2S-1, 8-pin connector. Check for continuity between ground and PCM harness connector "C" terminal No. 23 (Black wire). If continuity does not exist, replace HO2S-1. If continuity exists, check for short to ground in Black wire between PCM 31-pin connector "C" and HO2S-1. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
