Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit Test

  1. Check fuse No. 15 (7.5-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, replace fuse and retest system. If fuse blows again, locate short to ground and repair as necessary. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  2. Disconnect VSS 3-pin connector. Connect Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3020A) to VSS connector (harness side). Connect Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) positive lead to Red clip of test harness and connect DVOM negative lead to ground. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between VSS and ground (G101). See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  .
  3. Connect DVOM positive lead to White clip of test harness and DVOM negative lead to Red clip of test harness. Turn ignition on. If battery voltage is exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between VSS and underdash fuse/relay box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Connect DVOM positive lead to Green clip of test harness and DVOM negative lead to Red clip of test harness. If voltage reading is about 5 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage reading is not about 5 volts or more, repair open in Blue/White wire between VSS and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Turn ignition off. Raise and support vehicle. Connect other end of test harness to VSS connector (component side). Turn ignition on and shift transaxle into Neutral. Block one drive wheel and slowly rotate opposite wheel. If voltage pulses between 0-5 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage does not pulse between 0-5 volts or more, replace VSS.
  6. Remove test harness and reconnect VSS connectors. Disconnect gauge assembly 16-pin connector "B". With one drive wheel blocked, slowly rotate opposite wheel. Using DVOM, check voltage between ground and gauge assembly connector "B" terminal No. 11 (Blue/White wire) as wheel is rotated. See Fig 1 . If voltage pulses, replace speedometer. If voltage does not pulse, repair open in Blue/White wire between VSS and speedometer. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
