Removal & Installation (Civic)
- Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver's side instrument panel lower cover and knee bolster. Disconnect 5-pin connector from underdash fuse/relay box and 7-pin connector from main wiring harness. Remove steering column covers. Go to next step.
- Remove column holder mounting nuts and bolts. Lower steering column assembly. Center punch each of 2 shear bolts and drill their heads off with a 3/16" (5 mm) drill bit. Remove shear bolts from switch body and remove switch assembly. Remove 2 switch mounting screws and remove ignition switch. Go to next step.
- Install new ignition switch without key inserted. Loosely tighten NEW shear bolts. Insert ignition key. Check for proper operation of steering wheel lock mechanism. Ensure ignition key operates freely in lock housing. Tighten shear bolts until hex heads twist off. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
