Fuel Gauge Test

CAUTION: In the following tests, DO NOT  apply battery voltage to wire terminals, or fuel gauge will be damaged. Turn ignition off before fuel gauge pointer reaches "F" mark, or fuel gauge will be damaged.
  1. Turn ignition off. Check fuse No. 13 (15-amp) in underdash fuse/relay block. If fuse is okay, remove rear seat cushion. Remove rear floor beam. Remove fuel tank access panel. Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit harness connector.
  2. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between fuel gauge sending unit harness connector terminals No. 1 (Black wire) and No. 2 (Yellow/Blue wire). See Figure. Voltage reading should be 5-8 volts. If voltage reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, check for open in Black or Yellow/Blue wire circuits. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Check for poor harness ground connector G501. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS .
  3. Turn ignition off. Connect a jumper wire between harness connector terminals No. 1 (Black wire) and No. 2 (Yellow/Blue wire). Turn ignition on. Ensure fuel gauge pointer starts to move toward "F" mark on gauge. Turn ignition off before pointer reaches "F" mark to avoid damage to fuel gauge. If fuel gauge pointer does not move, replace fuel gauge. If fuel gauge moves towards "F", go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Fuel gauge and wiring are okay. Test fuel gauge sending unit. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT TEST.
