Charging System Warning Light
NOTE:
Prior to performing a charging system warning light test, check all wiring harness connections, ground strap connections and the alternator belt tension.
- Charge light should illuminate as ignition switch is turned to "ON" position. If not, unplug alternator connector and short the pin of the White/Blue wire to ground.
- If light still does not come on, check fuse, connectors, instrument cluster and warning light panel for an open or short circuit. Check bulb in warning display and replace if burned out.
- If warning light comes on, regulator warning relay contacts are not completing the circuit to ground. Repair as necessary and repeat test.
- Start engine and let it idle. Charge warning light should go off. If it stays on all the time, or stays on at idle and goes off with an increase in engine speed, check alternator sensor fuse and wire harness.
- If fuses and wires are okay, check alternator output. If alternator output is below specification, repair as necessary and retest system. If alternator is within specification, inspect alternator neutral wire circuit and replace if damaged or worn.
