Transmission End & Torque Converter Housing: Reassembly

  1. Install idler gear, then idler gear shaft and bearing to transmission housing. Expand mainshaft and countershaft bearing snap rings and install bearings to transmission housing. On torque converter housing, install 3" snap ring if removed. Drive mainshaft and countershaft bearings and seals into housing.
  2. On end housing, install feed pipe "O" rings, collars and washers to feed pipes. Install pins to feed pipes and install feed pipes to end cover. Install snap rings retaining feed pipes.
NOTE: Make sure lugs on feed pipe collar are aligned with slots in end cover housing.
  3. To determine side clearance of differential to transmission, temporarily install snap ring to converter housing (do not install oil seal at this time). Install differential to converter housing.
  4. Install mainshaft and countershaft to converter housing. Install new gasket to converter housing, install dowel pins and install transmission housing to converter housing. Install and tighten converter housing-to-transmission bolts.
  5. Make sure differential is bottomed in transmission housing, then use a feeler gauge to check clearance between snap ring and outer race of bearing in converter housing. Clearance should be .006" (.15 mm) maximum. If clearance is not to specifications, select snap ring to give proper clearance. See SIDE CLEARANCE SNAP RING THICKNESS  table.
  6. Disassemble temporarily assembled transmission and install oil seal and correct snap ring to converter housing. Install differential and snap ring to converter housing.
