Timing Belt & Camshaft Pulley: Installation

  1. Ensure crankshaft is still at TDC. Install camshaft pulley, special washer and retaining bolt. Tighten to 27 ft. lbs. (38 N.m) on Prelude model; 22 ft. lbs. (30 N.m) on all other models. Check camshaft position has not changed.
  2. On Prelude models, position small pulley hole at top. On other models, large pulley hole with cutaway portion should be at top. Timing mark on pulley should align with cylinder head arrow on Accord 1.75L and Civic 1.5L engines; with valve cover surface on Civic 1.3L and Prelude 1.8L engines. See Figure and Figure .
  3. Loosen tensioner adjusting and pivot bolts. Install timing belt onto sprockets, making sure directional arrow on belt points in original direction of rotation. Use care not to excessively bend or twist belt.
  4. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 1/4 turn to create tension on belt. Tighten lower tensioner adjusting bolt. Tighten upper pivot bolt. Reverse removal procedures to complete installation.
