- Remove battery cables and battery. On Civic, remove battery mounting tray. On Prelude, remove headlight manual retracting knob caps, and turn knobs to bring headlights to "ON" position. On all models, remove grille and bumper apron. On Civic, remove headlight trim.
- On all models, remove hood brackets and hood. Remove oil filler cap, and drain engine oil from crankcase. Remove radiator cap, and drain coolant from radiator and engine.
NOTE:
Engine coolant drain plug is located below No. 2 spark plug.
- Drain transaxle. Remove air cleaner, filter and all related hoses and ducting. Label and disconnect all vacuum, ventilation and air hoses between engine and chassis. Label and disconnect all electrical wiring between engine and chassis. Disconnect fuel hose at fuel filter.
- To prevent damage, remove anti-afterburn valve prior to attaching engine hoist lifting chain to engine hoist bracket near valve. Also attach chain to transaxle bracket.
- Disconnect throttle cable from carburetor, using care not to bend cable. If equipped, remove cruise control actuator bracket bolts, and pull actuator away from body panel. Disconnect vacuum reservoir hose.
CAUTION:
When removing throttle cable, ONLY remove lock nut facing throttle lever.
- Remove radiator hoses and heater hoses from engine. If equipped, detach EGR control box and let hang next to engine. Remove alternator. If A/C equipped, remove compressor (with hoses connected) and bracket, and secure away from engine.
- On manual transaxle models, loosen clutch cable adjusting nut and disconnect cable from release arm. Remove shift rod yoke attaching bolt and shift lever torque rod at transaxle housing. To remove shift rod on Civic, pull back spring clip, and remove spring pin with a punch.
- On all automatic transaxle models, remove oil cooling lines at transaxle. Remove shift cable holder at transaxle. On all models, remove cable clip and pull speedometer cable from cable holder. DO NOT
remove cable holder. If equipped, remove tachometer cable at engine.
- If equipped with power steering, remove speed sensor and "V" belt. Disconnect pump and move it to one side. Remove power steering pump bracket.
- On California and high altitude models, remove air jet controller. On all models, remove connectors and hoses from 3 control boxes. Lift boxes from their brackets, allowing them to hang beside engine. Disconnect ground cable at transmission.
- Place front of vehicle on jack stands and remove front wheels. On vehicles with automatic transaxle, remove shift console. Place shift lever in reverse, and remove lock pin from end of shift cable. Unscrew cable mounting bolts and remove shift cable holder. Remove exhaust header pipe from manifold.
- Remove cotter pin and castle nut at tie rod ball joints. On Accord and Prelude, use ball joint remover tool (07941-6920001) to disconnect right and left lower arm bolt and tie rod end ball joints. On Civic, use same tool to remove right and left lower arm ball joints and tie rod ball joints.
- On all models, turn each steering knuckle outward as far as possible. Using a screwdriver, pry against inner "CV" joint at transaxle housing (move it approximately 1/2") forcing spring clip out of its groove inside differential side gear splines. Remove right and left axles. Coat precision finished surfaces with clean oil or grease. Place plastic bags over drive shaft ends.
CAUTION:
When pulling axles, be careful not to damage differential seals.
- Raise engine enough to relieve load on engine mounts. Remove 3 engine support bolts and push engine support (timing belt side of engine) into shock mount bracket. Remove front and rear engine mounts and torque rods (swing rods out of way).
- Carefully lift engine and transaxle assembly approximately 6". Check for and remove any hoses, wires or other components which still attached to both engine and chassis. Lift engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.
