Cylinder Head: Removal
CAUTION:
DO NOT
remove cylinder head until engine temperature drops below 100°F (38°C).
- Disconnect negative cable from battery. Drain cooling system. Remove upper radiator hose, heater hose and by-pass hose. Remove air cleaner and related hoses and ducting.
- Label and disconnect all electrical wiring to cylinder head. Disconnect fuel lines, vacuum hoses and throttle cable from carburetor. Remove carburetor. Remove wiring and vacuum hoses from distributor.
- Remove header pipe from exhaust manifold (on Prelude, remove header pipe bracket). If equipped, remove power steering pump and set aside (DO NOT disconnect hoses). On vehicles without A/C, remove bolt securing alternator bracket to cylinder head and loosen alternator adjusting bolt.
- On A/C models, remove compressor (with hoses connected) and secure away from engine. Remove compressor bracket. Remove cam cover and timing belt upper cover. Bring No. 1 piston to TDC at end of compression stroke. Loosen timing belt pivot and adjusting bolts. Slip timing belt off camshaft sprocket.CAUTION: DO NOT crimp or bend timing belt more than 90°. DO NOT permit belt sides to deflect within 1" (25 mm) of each other.
- On Civic and Accord, remove oil pump gear cover and pull oil pump shaft out of cylinder head. On Prelude engines, remove carburetors and intake manifold. Remove cylinder head bolts in reverse of tightening sequence by turning 1/3 turn at a time until all bolts are loosened. Remove cylinder head.
