Power Brake Unit: Disassembly

  1. Scribe an index mark across front and rear power brake unit housings for reassembly reference. On Civic models, remove lock spring and lock plate.
  2. Drain brake fluid. Remove master cylinder and output rod.
  3. To remove and disassemble rear housing on Civic, reinstall master cylinder mount nuts with lock nuts behind them. Tighten nuts against each other on studs.
  4. Clamp power brake unit in vise. Tighten vise against locked nuts on studs. Attach brake unit handles (07967-6340000) to rear housing with 4 nuts. Turn rear housing counterclockwise until locking tabs are free of slots on front housing. See Fig 1 .

  5. Remove reaction cover, reaction ring and reaction plates. Pry bushing retainer out of rear housing. Remove bushing and piston seal. Remove snap ring from push rod.
  6. Remove valve holder assembly from piston. Remove circlip from valve holder assembly and disassemble valves.
  7. Pry off diaphragm retainer. Remove diaphragm from piston. Remove rod seal from front housing.
  8. To remove and disassemble rear housing on Accord & Prelude, carefully remove retaining circlips while holding front and rear housing together. Remove washers and seals from rear housing. Remove snap ring.
  9. Remove spring retainer, booster spring, retainer and through bolt boots. Remove output rod, reaction disc and pushrod seat.
  10. Remove diaphragm from rear housing. Remove yoke, push rod lock nut, star lock nut, adjuster and filter.
  11. Remove snap ring and valve holder assembly. Remove circlip from valve holder assembly and disassemble. See Fig 2 .
