Hydraulic Pressure Tests

  1. Before performing pressure tests, be sure that fluid level and condition have been checked and corrected as necessary. With engine at normal operating temperature, connect a tachometer to engine.
  2. Connect pressure gauges to the following pressure test points: line pressure port, 1st clutch pressure port, 2nd clutch pressure port and 3rd clutch pressure port. See Fig 1.
  3. Raise front wheels off ground and support with safety stands. Start and run engine at 2000 RPM. Place selector lever in the following positions: "P", "N", "2", "D3", "D4" and "R". Note pressure readings at each selector lever position and compare, readings to MAIN FLUID PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  4. If line pressure reading in "P" or "N" is not to specifications, check torque converter, oil pump pressure regulator or torque converter check valve. If 1st clutch pressure reading in "D3" or "D4" is not to specifications, check 1st clutch. If 3rd clutch pressure reading in "D3" or "D4" is not to specifications, check 3rd clutch.
  5. If 2nd line pressure reading in "2" (manual) is not to specifications, check 2nd clutch. If 4th line pressure reading in "R" is not to specifications, check servo valve. If 4th line pressure reading in "D4" is not to specifications, check 4th clutch.
NOTE: Allow engine to return to idle before changing selector positions.
  6. Stop engine and remove pressure gauge connections from transmission. Connect pressure gauge to throttle pressure port and disconnect throttle cable at carburetor. Start engine, place selector lever in "D" and run engine at 1000 RPM. Depress accelerator pedal so throttle control lever is in full throttle position and note pressure reading. Compare reading with MAIN FLUID PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  7. If throttle pressure reading in "D3" or "D4" is not to specifications, check throttle valve "A", throttle valve "B" or throttle modulator valve.
  8. Stop engine and remove pressure gauge from throttle pressure port and reconnect throttle cable at carburetor. Place vehicle on a chassis dynamometer or raise and support front of vehicle on safety stands. Connect pressure gauge to governor pressure port. Start engine place selector lever in, "D3" or "D4" and increase engine speed to 30 MPH. Note pressure reading and compare it to MAIN FLUID PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  9. If governor pressure reading was not to specifications, check governor valve.
