Axle Shafts: Removal

  1. Drain transmission, then bend tabs on spindle nut washer and loosen nut. Raise and support vehicle. Remove nut and wheel.
  2. Remove ball joint nut and separate steering knuckle from ball joint. Pull steering knuckle outward until axle shaft is clear of front hub.
  3. Pry constant velocity (CV) joint out of transaxle case approximately 1/2", this will collapse spring clip (on axle shaft inside transaxle case) and allow axle shaft to be withdrawn from case. See Fig 1.
  4. Pull axle shaft out of transaxle case and out of front hub assembly. Repeat procedures for other axle shaft.
