Clutch Assemblies: Reassembly

NOTE: If new lined plates are installed, soak in ATF fluid before installation.

Lubricate all parts with ATF fluid before assembling. Install new "O" ring on piston. Make sure clutch piston spring washer is installed with high side facing away from clutch drum. Install piston (lubricate "O" ring with ATF fluid) to clutch drum. Apply pressure to piston (by hand) and rotate piston to ensure proper seating.
Install return spring and spring retainer. Position a new snap ring on spring retainer. Install a spring compressor to clutch drum and spring retainer. Compress spring and fit snap ring to groove. Slowly release spring compressor and ensure snap ring seats properly.
Install clutch pack, starting with a steel plate and alternating with lined plates, ending with the end plate. Install large snap ring to clutch drum. Measure clearance between end plate and lined plate. Clearance should be .016-.028" (.4-.7 mm).
If clearance is not to specifications, select an end plate to obtain correct clearance. See END PLATE THICKNESS table. With correct end plate installed, check operation of clutch by blowing compressed air into oil passage in clutch drum. Clutch should apply. Remove air pressure and clutch should release.
