Connecting Rod Bearings
- Prior to disassembly, ensure connecting rod bearing caps are marked for reassembly in their original positions. Also, check connecting rod side play.
- When using Plastigage method to check bearing clearances, torque bearing caps to 23 ft. lbs. (32 N.m) for 1.8L engines; 21 ft. lbs. (29 N.m) for all others. Ensure oil film is wiped from surfaces to be checked.
- A code is stamped on each connecting rod and cap, indicating bore size of rod's big end. Crankshaft rod journals size codes are stamped on crankshaft counterweight pads. See Figure . Use both codes to obtain correct replacement bearings.
