Wheel Bearing & Hub: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel. Remove caliper from steering knuckle and support with wire. Remove disc rotor. If rotor cannot be removed by hand, install two 8-mm bolts into threaded holes. As 8-mm bolts are alternately tightened, rotor will be forced off.
  2. On 2WD, remove hub end cover. On 4WD models, remove locking hub assembly. See AUTOMATIC & MANUAL LOCKING HUB (4WD). On all models, install Spindle Nut Socket (J-42119-1) and Wrench Plate (J-42119-2) to spindle nut and wheel hub using hub bolts. Align wrench with slot on spindle nut. Rotate spindle nut counterclockwise 2 full turns to disengage anti-rotation spring from spindle nut. Remove socket and plate. Remove spindle nut, spring and spring backup plate from spindle.
  3. Remove locking hub assembly with bearings and seals. If locking hub assembly cannot be removed by hand, use a slide hammer and Front Wheel Hub Remover (J-37781). Remove outer bearing from locking hub assembly. Remove inner grease seal, snap ring and inner wheel bearing. Remove inner and outer races using Bearing Race Remover (J-37772) and Driver Handle (J-8092) if they are scored or pitted.
