Removal (4-Wheel Drive)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front skid plate (if equipped). Drain front differential. Remove front wheels. Disconnect drive shaft from differential. Remove locking hub cap by unscrewing counterclockwise. Remove locking hub retaining bolts and locking hubs. Remove snap ring and washer from end of axle shafts.
- Separate tie rod from right lower control arm. Support right suspension with floor jack. Separate steering knuckle and lower ball joint from control arm. Slowly lower floor jack. Swing steering knuckle outward and pull axle shaft from knuckle assembly.
- Install Shaft Removal Fork (J-37780) between right axle shaft and differential housing. Tap on shaft removal fork and remove right axle shaft. Make a match mark on left axle shaft flanges to be used for installation reference. Disconnect and separate left axle shaft from inner axle shaft flange at front differential housing.
- Support differential assembly. To ensure drive shaft balance, make a match mark on drive shaft pinion flange and pinion flange yoke before drive shaft is removed. Remove drive shaft. Remove front differential-to-bracket mounting bolts. Remove front differential assembly. Drain engine oil.
- Remove clutch housing cover (M/T models) or torque converter housing plate (A/T models). Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan. Remove oil pump pick-up tube for oil pan removal (if necessary).
