Removal (16-Valve)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove front grille and header panel. Drain and remove radiator. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT . Remove 5 camshaft sprocket. Remove valve cover, distributor and distributor housing.
  2. Loosen all valve adjusting screw lock nuts and adjusting screws until valves are fully closed. See Figure. Remove camshaft. See CAMSHAFT  (16-Valve).
    CAUTION: On 16-valve engines, camshaft can be damaged if camshaft carrier bolts are removed randomly. Loosen camshaft carrier cap bolts gradually in reverse order of tightening sequence. See Figure.
  3. Remove rocker arm shaft plug from front of head. Remove timing belt inside cover. Remove intake rocker arms, with clips, from rocker arm shaft. Remove rocker arm shaft retaining screws. Push rocker arm shaft through rear of head until end is exposed.
  4. Remove rocker arm shaft "O" ring. Note location of rocker arm components for reassembly reference. Remove exhaust rocker arms, springs and rocker arm shaft by sliding rocker arm shaft out through front of head. See Figure. Keep components in order removed to ensure installation in original position.
