Drive Pinion Bearing Preload Adjustment

  1. Install Pinion Dummy (09926-78310 ) and pinion gear inner and outer bearings to differential carrier. See Fig 1 . Lubricate bearings with oil.

  2. Install pinion flange nut and Preload Adjuster (09922-75222 ) on pinion flange. Using a spring scale, check starting preload (not rotating preload). Tighten flange nut until specified starting preload is obtained. See PINION BEARING PRELOAD SPECIFICATIONS  .

    (1) Preload is 8-15 INCH lbs. (.9-1.7 N.m) when not using preload adjuster.
  3. Adjust dial indicator until reading is zero. Short pointer on dial indicator should be past .08" (2.0 mm) when long pointer is at zero. Place pre-adjusted dial indicator and dummy on pinion dummy. Note reading of indicator between zero position with measuring tip extended.
  4. Measure distance "A" and "B". See Fig 1 . On front differential, the sum of "A" and "B" is 3.7" (94 mm). On rear differential, the sum of "A" and "B" is 3.8" (97 mm). Record reading of measurement "C". See Fig 1 . Record value marked on side of pinion shaft ("E").
  5. Add recorded value of measurement "C" to sum of "A" and "B"(3.7" (94 mm) for front, 3.8" (97 mm) for rear). Subtract value "E", recorded from side of pinion shaft, from sum of "A", "B" and "C". Select adjusting shim size closest to calculated value.
  6. Shims are available in .001" (.03 mm) increments, ranging from .039" (1.00 mm) to .050" (1.30 mm). A .012" (.30 mm) shim is also available. Install pinion selective shim on pinion gear shaft. Install pinion gear shaft. Install NEW collapsible spacer on pinion gear shaft.
    CAUTION: Tightening flange nut will preload pinion bearings. Exceeding preload specification will over-compress collapsible spacer and will require installation of a NEW collapsible spacer.
  7. Install outer pinion bearing in differential carrier. Using Oil Seal Installer (09951-18210 ), install pinion oil seal. Apply lubricant to oil seal lip. Install pinion flange, washer and flange nut using Pinion Flange Holder (09922-66020 ).
  8. Adjust bearing preload starting torque to 16-30 INCH lbs. (1.8-3.4 N.m.). Measure pinion bearing preload again after rotating pinion several times to ensure bearings are seated. If preload is reduced, reset bearing preload.
