Wheel Bearing & Hub: Removal

Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel. Remove caliper from steering knuckle and support with wire. Remove disc rotor. If rotor cannot be removed by hand, install two 8-mm bolts into threaded holes. As 8-mm bolts are alternately tightened, rotor will be forced off.
On 2WD models, remove hub end cover. On 4WD models, remove locking hub cover and snap ring from end of drive axle shaft. See appropriate LOCKING HUB (4WD). Remove drive axle shaft spindle washer from drive axle shaft.
On all models, remove wheel bearing lock plate set screws and wheel bearing lock plate. See Figure . Using Wheel Bearing Socket (J-37763 ), remove bearing lock nut. Remove hub assembly with bearings and seals. If hub assembly can not be removed by hand, use a slide hammer and Front Wheel Hub Remover (J-37781).
On 2WD models, remove outer wheel bearing. Remove inner grease seal, snap ring and inner wheel bearing. Using a Front Wheel Hub Bearing Race Remover (J-37772 ), remove bearing races if pitted or scored. On 4WD models, sealed cartridge bearings are removed and installed using a press and bearing adaptor. Sealed cartridge bearings cannot be reused if removed from hub.
