Installation (8-Valve)
- Install timing belt inside cover and seal (if removed). Install timing belt guide, key and crankshaft sprocket. Tighten crankshaft sprocket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .CAUTION: Ensure concave side of timing belt guide is toward the oil pump. Flat side of belt guide goes against crankshaft sprocket.
- Install camshaft sprocket (if removed). Ensure sprocket aligns with pin in camshaft. Tighten camshaft sprocket retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- If tensioner was removed, install tensioner plate on tensioner. Ensure lug of tensioner plate engages in hole on rear of tensioner. Install tensioner, tensioner plate and tensioner spring on cylinder block. Tighten tensioner bolt finger tight to allow movement of tensioner.CAUTION: Ensure tensioner plate moves when tensioner is moved toward timing belt. If tensioner plate does not move, ensure lug engages in tensioner hole.
- Remove valve cover. Loosen all valve adjusting screws to fully close valves, before installing timing belt. Ensure camshaft rotates freely during belt tension adjustment. Rotate camshaft clockwise, and align timing mark on camshaft sprocket with timing mark on timing belt inside cover. See Figure.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise, and align timing mark on crankshaft sprocket with timing mark on oil pump housing. See Figure. Install timing belt so arrow on timing belt aligns with direction of crankshaft rotation. Ensure there is no slack on right side of timing belt.CAUTION: Install timing belt so that direction arrow on timing belt is aligned with direction of crankshaft rotation. See Figure.
- Install tensioner spring. Finger tighten tensioner stud. Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions clockwise to ensure all slack is removed from timing belt.
- Tighten tensioner stud to specification. Tighten tensioner bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Ensure all timing marks align. If timing marks are not aligned, remove timing belt and repeat procedure.
- Adjust valve clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT under ADJUSTMENTS. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
