Valve Guides
- Check valve stem-to-valve guide oil clearance. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure valve stem diameter is within specification. Valve guide can be replaced if clearance exceeds specification.NOTE: DO NOT reuse valve guides if they have been removed.
- To replace valve guide, use hammer and Valve Guide Remover (J-34833 for 8-valve; J-37968 for 16-valve). Drive valve guide from combustion side of cylinder head toward the valve spring side. Using a reamer (J-34832 for 8-valve; J-37972 for 16-valve), ream guide hole to remove burrs.
- Install valve guide using a hammer and Valve Guide Installer (J-34834 for 8-valve; J-37968 for 16-valve), drive valve guide into cylinder head from valve spring side of cylinder head until valve guide installer contacts cylinder head. Using Reamer (J-34831 for 8-valve; J-37971 for 16-valve), ream valve guide and clean hole.
NOTE:
Ensure valve guide installed height above cylinder head surface is .55" (14.0 mm) on 8-valve and is .45" (11.4 mm) on 16-valve.
