Headlight/Dimmer Switch

  1. Headlight switch acts only as grounding switch for headlight circuits. Switch ground connection is behind left instrument panel, on support post above ECM. Ensure left and right headlight fuses, located in fuse block under left instrument panel, are good.
  2. Turn headlights on (low-beam position). If headlights do not come on go to step 5). If headlights come on, push dimmer switch stalk forward to turn on high beams. If high beams do not come on, leave switch in this position and go to step 4). If high beams come on, go to next step.
  3. Pull dimmer switch stalk backward to operate high-beam flash-to-pass position. If lights do not come on in this position, replace combination switch. If lights come on, combination switch is okay.
  4. Remove left and right headlight fuses, located in fuse block under left instrument panel. Locate combination switch harness 20-pin connector behind instrument panel, near steering column. Using a DVOM, backprobe combination switch harness 20-pin connector from terminal No. 1 (Red wire) to ground and measure resistance. If resistance is more than .3 ohm, replace combination switch. If resistance is less than .3 ohm, switch is okay. Repair open in Red wire circuit to headlights. See appropriate wiring diagram under HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Install left and right headlight fuses.
  5. If headlights did not come on, remove left and right headlight fuses. Locate combination switch harness 20-pin connector behind instrument panel, near steering column. Using a DVOM, backprobe combination switch harness 20-pin connector from terminal No. 20 (Black wire) to ground and measure resistance. If resistance is more than .3 ohm, repair Black wire between combination switch and ground. If resistance is less than .3 ohm, go to next step.
  6. Using a DVOM, backprobe combination switch harness 20-pin connector from terminal No. 11 (Red/White wire) to ground and measure resistance. If resistance is more than .3 ohm, replace combination switch. If resistance is less than .3 ohm, repair open in Red/White wire between combination switch and junction of Red/White wire from headlights. See appropriate wiring diagram under HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Install left and right headlight fuses.
