Fuel Gauge Indicates "E" At All Times

  1. Unplug fuel gauge sending unit connector. Using a DVOM, check resistance between sending unit connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is greater than 3 ohms, repair open in Black ground wire.
  2. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, connect a fused jumper wire between fuel gauge sending unit connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Red wire) and ground. If fuel gauge indicates full, replace fuel gauge sending unit.
  3. If fuel gauge continues to indicate empty, leave jumper connected and unplug 13-pin instrument panel cluster assembly connector. Using a DVOM, check resistance between connector terminal No. 4 and ground. If resistance is greater than 3 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow/Red wire.
  4. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, check instrument panel cluster printed circuit for cracks and poor connection. If printed circuit is okay, replace fuel gauge.
