Removal (1.8L)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove PCV hoses from valve cover. Remove accelerator cable retaining clips from cylinder head.
- Remove center cover from valve cover. Remove spark plug wires from spark plugs and clips. Remove upper timing belt cover. Remove hoses from valve cover. Remove valve cover bolts, valve cover and gasket.
- Remove oxygen sensor electrical connector. Remove exhaust manifold heat shield. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. Lower vehicle.
- Remove EGR pipe from exhaust manifold and EGR valve from intake manifold. Remove power steering pump and bracket if necessary. Remove exhaust manifold from cylinder head.
- Disconnect electrical connections from thermostat housing. Disconnect vacuum hoses from upper intake manifold. Remove coolant by-pass pipe bracket from cylinder head.
- Disconnect control cables, coolant hoses and air intake duct from throttle body. Remove throttle body. Remove canister and Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor hoses from upper intake manifold. Remove upper intake manifold.
- Disconnect fuel injector electrical connectors. Disconnect heater hoses and upper radiator hose. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Cover fuel lines with shop towel, and disconnect fuel return and supply lines.
- Remove vacuum switching valve electrical connector and vacuum hose. Remove vacuum switching valve from bracket and remove bracket. Remove lower intake manifold from cylinder head.
- Support engine with floor jack. Remove right engine mount through bolt and mount from vehicle. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove cylinder head bolts in proper sequence. See Fig 1
. Raise cylinder head, and disconnect oil cooler pipe from oil cooler. Remove cylinder head and gasket.
