Valve Guides

  1. Check valve stem-to-valve guide clearance. Ensure valve stem diameter is within specification. Valve guide may be replaced if clearance exceeds specification. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. To replace valve guide, use hammer and Valve Guide Remover (J-37985). Working from combustion chamber side of head, drive valve guide out camshaft side of head. Using hammer and Valve Guide Installer (J-38462), drive valve guide into cylinder head.
  3. Measure valve stem-to-valve guide clearance. If clearance is less than .0009" (.023 mm) on intake valves or .0012" (.030 mm) on exhaust valve, ream valve guide.
