Fitting Pistons

  1. Different sized pistons are used. Piston size can be determined by identification mark on top of piston. See Fig 1 . Piston identification mark is a letter representing piston diameter.
  2. To determine piston-to-cylinder clearance, measure cylinder bore diameter and piston skirt diameter. On 1.6L, piston skirt diameter must be measured 1.2" (30 mm) from top of piston, at 90-degree angle to piston pin. On 1.8L, measure piston skirt diameter 1.29" (33 mm) from top of piston, at 90-degree angle to piston pin.
  3. Subtract piston skirt diameter from bore diameter. Ensure clearance is within specification. See CYLINDER BLOCK table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If clearance is not within specification, replace all 4 pistons. Bore cylinder block for oversized pistons if necessary.
