Valve Clearance Adjustment: 1.6L
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove PCV hoses from valve cover. Remove spark plug wires from clip. Remove valve cover-to-timing belt cover bolts.
- Loosen lower timing belt cover bolts. Remove valve cover bolts and valve cover. Rotate crankshaft so No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover.
- Ensure valves on No. 1 cylinder have play. If valves are tight, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees. Using feeler gauge, check clearance between rocker arm and valve stem on following: all valves on No. 1 cylinder, intake valves on No. 2 cylinder and exhaust valve on No. 3 cylinder.
- Adjust clearance if not within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (1.6L) table. To adjust, loosen lock nut, rotate adjusting screw, then tighten lock nut.
- Rotate crankshaft 360 degrees. Check clearance on following: all valves on No. 4 cylinder, intake valves on No. 3 cylinder and exhaust valve on No. 2 cylinder. Adjust clearance if necessary.
- Before installing valve cover, apply RTV Sealant (1052917) to contact surfaces between valve cover and camshaft bearing caps No. 1 and No. 5. To install valve cover, reverse removal procedure.
