Inspection (1.8L)

Inspect valve lifter and bore for damage. Measure O.D. of valve lifter. Replace valve lifter if damaged or O.D. is not within specification. See HYDRAULIC VALVE LIFTERS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Check for air in lifter by attempting to compress lifter plunger with fingers. If lifter collapses, remove plunger from lifter by tapping lifter on a clean piece of wood. Immerse both lifter and plunger in clean motor oil and install plunger in lifter body with oil hole facing upward. Compress plunger while immersed to force air out.
