Timing Belt: Installation

  1. Rotate camshafts so timing marks align with cylinder head surface. See Figure .
  2. Ensure timing mark (notch) on rear of crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump. See Figure . Install timing belt over following components in the order listed: crankshaft sprocket, water pump, idler pulley, exhaust camshaft, intake camshaft and belt tensioner. If reusing belt, ensure belt is installed in correct rotation direction.
  3. Allow belt tensioner to exert tension on timing belt. Hold belt tensioner, and tighten belt tensioner bolt. Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions clockwise, and align all timing marks.
  4. Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees. Measure timing belt deflection at midpoint between camshaft sprockets. Ensure timing belt deflection is within specification. See TIMING BELT DEFLECTION SPECIFICATIONS table. Repeat steps 3) and 4) if belt deflection is not within specification.
    CAUTION: Ensure timing marks align after belt adjustment.
  5. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.
