Hydraulic Valve Lifters: Inspection

Inspect valve lifter and bore for damage. Measure O.D. of valve lifter. Replace valve lifter if damaged or O.D. is not within specification. See HYDRAULIC VALVE LIFTERS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. Check for air in lifter by attempting to compress lifter plunger with fingers. If lifter collapses, remove plunger from lifter, and immerse both lifter and plunger in clean motor oil. Install plunger in lifter body and compress while immersed to force air out.
