Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE. Disconnect battery cables. Remove battery and battery tray. Remove hood. Drain cooling system. Disconnect necessary coolant and fuel lines. Remove air intake duct and throttle cable from throttle body.
  2. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect necessary vacuum hoses and electrical connections. Remove ignition coil and bracket. On A/T models, disconnect electrical connections, shift cable and oil cooler lines from transaxle. On M/T models, disconnect clutch and shift control cables.
  3. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable at transaxle. Remove coolant recovery bottle and bracket. Remove power steering pump and A/C compressor (if equipped) with hoses attached. Remove cooling fan and shroud.
  4. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower engine covers. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove front tire and wheel assemblies. Remove staked area from axle shaft nut at hub assembly. Remove axle shaft nut. Remove tie rod nut from steering knuckle.
  5. Separate tie rod from steering knuckle. Remove ball joint-to-lower control arm retaining nuts.
  6. Using brass hammer, tap on axle shaft until it is free of hub assembly. Using slide hammer and Shaft Puller (J-35762), pull axle shaft from transaxle.
  7. Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold. Disconnect torque rod at bracket on cylinder block. Support engine with hoist. Remove bolt from engine mount near timing belt cover.
  8. Remove rear engine mount bolt. Remove transaxle mount bolts. Remove center crossmember located below transaxle. Lift engine and transaxle from engine compartment.
