Removal (1.8L)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove PCV hoses from valve cover. Remove accelerator cable retaining clips from cylinder head.
- Remove center cover from valve cover. Remove spark plug wires from spark plugs and clips. Remove upper timing belt cover. Remove valve cover bolts, valve cover and gasket.
- Disconnect control cables, coolant hoses and air intake duct from throttle body. Remove coolant by-pass pipe bracket from cylinder head. Remove canister and Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor hoses from upper intake manifold.
- Disconnect vacuum hoses from upper intake manifold. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector and necessary electrical connections. Remove coolant by-pass pipe bracket from cylinder head.
- Disconnect heater hoses and upper radiator hose. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Cover fuel lines with shop towel, and disconnect fuel return and supply lines.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove right lower engine cover. Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold. Remove power steering pump and bracket if necessary. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Remove cylinder head bolts in proper sequence. See Fig 1
. Raise cylinder head, and disconnect oil cooler pipe from oil cooler. Remove cylinder head and gasket.
