Cylinder Head: Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten cylinder head bolts, in sequence, to specification in 2 steps. See Fig 1 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.
  2. If cylinder head components were serviced, check valve clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT under ADJUSTMENTS. Before installing valve cover, apply Sealant (1052942) at valve cover-to-camshaft bearing cap surfaces, on No. 1 and No. 5 bearing caps. Fill cooling system.

NOTE: Remove cylinder head with intake and exhaust manifolds connected.


  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence. See Figure . Tighten bolts in 2 steps to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.
  2. Before installing valve cover, apply RTV Sealant (1052917) to contact surfaces between valve cover and camshaft bearing caps No. 1 and No. 5. Fill cooling system, and adjust throttle cable.
