Removal (1.8L)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove PCV hoses from valve cover. Remove accelerator cable retaining clips from cylinder head.
  2. Remove center cover from valve cover. Remove spark plug wires from spark plugs and clips. Remove upper timing belt cover. Remove valve cover bolts, valve cover and gasket.
  3. Disconnect electrical connections at distributor. Remove distributor cap. Mark rotor-to-distributor housing position and housing-to-cylinder head position. Remove retaining bolt and distributor assembly.
  4. Remove timing belt and sprockets from camshafts. To ensure timing mark alignment and timing belt adjustment, it may be necessary to remove timing belt covers for timing belt removal. See TIMING BELT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Remove camshaft bearing cap bolts evenly and in proper sequence. See Fig 1 . Note location of camshaft bearing caps for installation reference. Remove camshaft bearing caps, camshaft and seals.
