Removal (1.6L)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove valve cover bolts and valve cover. Rotate crankshaft, and position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" timing mark on timing belt cover.
  2. Disconnect electrical connections at distributor. Remove distributor cap. Mark rotor-to-distributor housing position and housing-to-cylinder head position. Remove retaining bolt and distributor assembly.
  3. Remove timing belt and sprocket from camshaft. To ensure timing mark alignment and adjustment, it may be necessary to remove timing belt cover for timing belt removal. See TIMING BELT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Remove rocker arm assembly. See ROCKER ARM under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove camshaft and seal. See Fig 1 .
