Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Installation

  1. Apply oil to camshaft journals. Install camshaft in cylinder head. Ensure locating dowel for camshaft sprocket is at 12 o'clock position. See Figure . Apply RTV Sealant (1052917) to contact surfaces between cylinder head and camshaft bearing caps No. 1 and No. 5.
  2. Install rocker arm assembly. Tighten bolts in sequence. See Figure . Tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. Using Seal Installer (J-35268), install NEW seal on camshaft.
  3. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Ensure reference marks align when installing distributor. Ensure timing marks align when installing timing belt.
  4. Adjust valve clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT under ADJUSTMENTS. Before installing valve cover, apply RTV Sealant (1052917) to contact surfaces between valve cover and camshaft bearing caps No. 1 and No. 5. To install valve cover, reverse removal procedure.


  1. Install camshafts in cylinder head. Ensure locating dowel for camshaft sprocket is at 12 o'clock position. Apply RTV Sealant (1052917) to contact surfaces between cylinder head and camshaft bearing caps No. 1 and No. 5. See Fig 1 .
  2. Install camshaft bearing caps in original location. Tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts evenly and in sequence. Refer to Figure . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. Using Seal Installer (J-35268), install NEW seal on camshafts.
  3. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Ensure reference marks align when installing distributor. Ensure timing marks align when installing timing belt.
  4. Before installing valve cover, apply RTV Sealant (1052917) to contact surfaces between valve cover and camshaft bearing caps No. 1 and No. 5. To install valve cover, reverse removal procedure.
