Valve Guides Service

  1. Check valve stem-to-valve guide clearance. See CYLINDER HEAD SPECS TABLE at end of article. Ensure valve stem diameter is within specification. Valve guide can be replaced if clearance exceeds specification.
  2. To replace valve guide, use hammer and Valve Guide Remover (J-37968-1). Drive valve guide from combustion side of cylinder head toward valve spring side.
  3. To install valve guide, heat cylinder head to 176-212°F (80-100°C). Using hammer and Valve Guide & Seal Installer (J-37968-2), drive valve guide into cylinder head until installer contacts cylinder head surfaced. Using Reamer (J-37971), ream valve guide.
CAUTION: Valve guide installed height must be .45" (11.4 mm) above cylinder head surface.
