- Install timing belt inside cover and seal (if removed). Install timing belt guide, key and crankshaft sprocket. Tighten crankshaft sprocket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
CAUTION:
Ensure concave side of timing belt guide faces oil pump. Flat side of timing belt guide goes against crankshaft sprocket.
- Install camshaft timing belt sprocket if removed. Ensure sprocket aligns with pin in camshaft. Tighten camshaft sprocket retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
- If tensioner was removed, install tensioner plate on tensioner. Ensure tensioner plate lug engages hole on rear of tensioner. Install tensioner and tensioner plate on cylinder block. Tighten tensioner bolt finger tight to allow movement of tensioner.
CAUTION:
Ensure tensioner plate moves when tensioner is moved toward timing belt. If tensioner plate does not move, ensure lug engaged in hole on tensioner.
- Ensure all timing marks align. See Fig 1. If timing marks are not aligned, rotate camshaft or crankshaft to align timing marks. DO NOT rotate camshaft or crankshaft so timing mark moves more that 90 degrees. See Fig 2.
- Install tensioner spring and spring damper. Push tensioner plate upward and install timing belt so arrow on timing belt or mark made during removal aligns with direction of crankshaft rotation. Ensure slack exists on drive side of timing belt.
CAUTION:
Timing belt must be installed so arrow on timing belt or mark made during removal aligns with direction of crankshaft rotation. Crankshaft rotates clockwise.
- Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions clockwise to ensure all slack is removed from timing belt.
- Tighten tensioner stud and tensioner bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
