Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner assembly and valve cover. Mark distributor location for reassembly reference. Remove distributor.
  2. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT in this article. Insert a .39" (9.9 mm) diameter rod in hole of camshaft (located near camshaft sprocket) to hold camshaft during camshaft sprocket removal. Remove retaining bolt and camshaft sprocket.
  3. Note location and direction of camshaft bearing caps. Remove camshaft bearing caps evenly. Remove camshaft bearing caps, camshaft and oil seal.
NOTE: Camshaft bearing caps are numbered with No. 1 at timing belt end of cylinder head. Arrow on bearing cap must point toward timing belt.
