Valve Clearance Adjustment

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1991 Suzuki Swift, 1991 Suzuki Sidekick, and 1991 Suzuki Samurai. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Swift DOHC engines have automatic valve lash adjusters. No adjustment is required.
  1. Ensure engine has reached normal operating temperature. Place No. 1 piston at TDC position. Remove distributor cap. Ensure rotor is pointing toward No. 1 distributor terminal.
  2. If rotor is not correctly positioned, rotate crankshaft clockwise 360 degrees until No. 1 piston is at TDC of compression stroke. Remove rocker arm cover.
  3. Check valve lash of cylinders No. 1, 2, 5 and 7. If valve lash is not as specified, loosen adjustment screw lock nut and turn adjustment screw until desired specification is obtained. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table. Hold adjustment screw stationary and tighten lock nut. Rotate crankshaft 360 degrees clockwise.
  4. Check valve lash of cylinders No. 3, No. 4, No. 6 and No. 8. Adjust valve lash as needed. Tighten adjusting screw lock nuts. Install rocker arm cover.
