Overhaul - A-240E/L, A-244L & A-245E: Description
Transaxles have 4 forward speeds and Reverse. Transaxle assemblies consists of a lock-up torque converter, oil pump, control valve assembly, forward clutch, direct clutch, differential, three (3) planetary gear sets and 3 one-way clutches. See Fig 1.
The A-240E and A-244E transaxles are Electronically Controlled Transaxles (ECT). Transaxle control ECU has been integrated with engine ECU. When shifting transaxle, engine torque is controlled and clutch hydraulic pressure in transaxle is electronically controlled to reduce transmission shift shock.
On A-240E transaxle, one of 2 different driving modes (NORMAL or POWER) can be selected by driver. Transaxle shift points are changed by ECT computer, depending on mode selected. The MR2 A-241E transaxle is installed in rear of vehicle.
To minimize possibility of incorrect operation of vehicle transaxle, a shift lock mechanism has also been added. For more information on shift lock and key lock system, see Toyota SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM article.
