Removal (Pickup & 4Runner)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 19 other vehicles, including the 1992 Toyota Tercel, 1992 Toyota Supra, 1992 Toyota Previa, 1992 Toyota Paseo, and 1992 Toyota MR2. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect and remove negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner assembly and ducting (if necessary). Disconnect transmission throttle valve cable from linkage and remove from bracket.
  2. Remove upper starter mounting nut. On 4WD Pickup and 4Runner, disconnect 5 electrical connectors. On all models, raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission and disconnect all external electrical connectors.
  3. Remove starter motor and support alongside of engine. Index mark and remove drive shaft(s). Disconnect speedometer cable and manual shift linkage. Disconnect and plug transmission oil cooler lines.
  4. On 2WD models, remove exhaust pipe support clamp, exhaust bracket and filler tube. On 4WD Pickup and 4Runner, remove clips and disconnect No. 1 and No. 2 shift linkage from cross shaft. Remove cross shaft from body. Disconnect exhaust pipe from tailpipe and remove clamp from transmission case.
  5. Remove clamp holding oil cooler lines to transfer chain case and disconnect transfer case oil cooler lines. On all models, secure transmission jack under transmission oil pan. Raise transmission enough to remove weight from rear engine mount.
  6. Remove rear engine mount along with bracket. Remove engine undercover to gain access to crankshaft pulley. On 4WD Pickup and 4Runner, remove crossmember and install a wood block between firewall and rear of cylinder head.
  7. On 2WD models, insert a piece of wood between engine oil pan and top of front crossmember. On all models, pry hole covers off of bellhousing cover plate. Turn crankshaft to gain access to torque converter bolts and remove 6 bolts.
  8. Install guide pin in one of torque converter bolt hole. Remove bolts attaching support braces to front of bellhousing and engine block, and remove support braces. Remove all bellhousing-to-engine mounting bolts.
  9. Pry on end of guide pin to begin moving torque converter and transmission from engine. Ensure that all cables and electrical harnesses are free from snagging when lowering transmission. Remove transmission from vehicle.
