Removal (MR2 & Tercel)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 19 other vehicles, including the 1992 Toyota Tercel, 1992 Toyota Supra, 1992 Toyota Previa, 1992 Toyota Paseo, and 1992 Toyota MR2. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. On MR2, remove air cleaner assembly. On all models, disconnect neutral safety switch and all other electrical connectors. Disconnect speedometer cable. Disconnect transaxle throttle cable from throttle linkage and remove cable from bracket.
  2. Remove wiring for starter and remove starter motor. Remove upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Raise and support vehicle. Drain fluid from transaxle and differential cavity.
  3. Disconnect oil cooler hoses from pipes and remove engine undercovers. Disconnect shift control cable at shift lever and remove cable from bracket. Remove both axle shafts.
  4. Manually turn engine crankshaft and remove 6 torque converter bolts from access hole in bellhousing cover. Remove ground cable from left side engine mounting bracket.
  5. Remove left side engine mount. Support engine with one jack and secure a transaxle jack under transaxle assembly. Remove 4 bolts and disconnect rear mounting bracket from body.
  6. Remove 3 bolts and remove engine rear mounting bracket. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Ensure that all electrical harnesses and cables do not snag when lowering transaxle assembly with jack.
