Removal (Land Cruiser)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain coolant at radiator drain cock and disconnect upper radiator hose. Disconnect transmission throttle cable from throttle linkage and remove cable from bracket.
  2. Disconnect electrical connectors located near starter. Remove transfer case shift lever knob and 4 bolts to remove shift lever boot. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission and transfer case.
  3. Remove transmission and transfer case undercovers. Remove clip and pin to disconnect shift rod from transfer case. Remove nut and washers to remove transfer case shift lever with control rod. Disconnect control rod from control shaft lever by removing nut on lever.
  4. On models with mechanical winch, remove shifter knob button and spring. Using an Allen wrench, remove 2 set screws and shift lever knob. Remove shift lever boot. Remove nut and disconnect shift rod from Power Take-Off (PTO).
  5. Remove bolt and remove shift lever with shift rod. Index mark drive shaft flanges and remove both front and rear shafts. Mark and remove PTO drive shaft (if applicable). Disconnect speedometer cable and 2 vacuum hoses from transfer case. Disconnect oil cooler tubes.
  6. Remove starter and transmission oil filler tube. Pry hole cover from bellhousing cover plate. Manually turn crankshaft and remove 6 torque converter bolts. Secure a transmission jack under transmission/transfer case assembly.
  7. Remove 8 bolts and 2 nuts and remove frame crossmember. Remove flange bolts and exhaust pipe clamp to remove front pipe from tail pipe. Remove front pipe from exhaust manifold.
  8. Support engine with a jack and wooden block. Lower rear of transmission/transfer case assembly. Remove 9 transmission mounting bolts. Ensure that throttle cable and all electrical harnesses are clear from snagging. Carefully draw assembly down and toward the rear when lowering.
