Removal & Installation - A/T: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 19 other vehicles, including the 1992 Toyota Tercel, 1992 Toyota Supra, 1992 Toyota Previa, 1992 Toyota Paseo, and 1992 Toyota MR2. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Apply multipurpose grease to center hub of torque converter. Install one guide pin in threaded mounting pad of torque converter to align torque converter. Distance from torque converter drive lug to engine mating surface of transaxle should be at least .51" (13 mm). See Figure.
  2. To complete installation of transaxle, reverse removal procedure. Torque converter bolts are color coded. Install Dark Green bolts first, then the remaining bolts. Tighten torque converter bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table at end of article.
  3. Fill transaxle to proper capacity. Check and adjust throttle cable and control cable. Inspect front wheel alignment.


  1. Apply multipurpose grease to center hub of torque converter. Install one guide pin in threaded mounting pad of torque converter to align torque converter. Distance from torque converter drive lug to engine mating surface of transaxle should be at least .51" (13 mm). See Fig 1.

  2. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation of transaxle. Torque converter bolts are color coded. Install Gray bolt first, then the remaining 5 bolts. Tighten torque converter bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table at end of article.
  3. Fill transaxle to proper capacity. Check and adjust throttle cable and control cable.


  1. Apply multipurpose grease to center hub of torque converter. Install one guide pin in threaded mounting pad of torque converter to align torque converter.
  2. Torque converter is correctly installed if torque converter drive lugs are at least .91" (23 mm) below engine mating surface. See Figure. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation of transaxle. Torque converter bolts are color coded.
  3. Install the White bolt and then the 5 remaining Yellow bolts. Tighten torque converter retaining bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table at end of article. Fill transaxle to proper capacity. Check and adjust throttle cable.


  1. Apply multipurpose grease to center hub of torque converter. Install one guide pin in threaded mounting pad of torque converter to align torque converter.
  2. Torque converter is correctly installed if torque converter drive lugs are at least 1.04" (26.5 mm) below engine mating surface. See Figure. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation of transmission.
  3. Tighten torque converter bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table at end of article. Fill transaxle to proper capacity. Check and adjust throttle cable.


  1. Apply multipurpose grease to center hub of torque converter. Install one guide pin in threaded mounting pad of torque converter to align torque converter.
  2. Torque converter is correctly installed if torque converter drive lugs are at least .65" (16.5 mm) below engine mating surface. See Figure. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation of transmission/transfer case assembly.
  3. Tighten torque converter bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table at end of article. Fill transmission, transfer case and PTO to proper fluid capacities.
  4. Check and adjust shift control linkage for transmission and transfer case. Check and adjust PTO linkage and transfer shift control lever. Adjust throttle cable.


  1. Apply multipurpose grease to center hub of torque converter. Install one guide pin in threaded mounting pad of torque converter to aid in aligning torque converter.
  2. Torque converter is correctly installed if torque converter drive lugs are at least .53" (13.4 mm) on Tercel and .51" (13 mm) on MR2, from edge of housing surface. See Figure. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation of transaxle.
  3. Tighten torque converter bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table at end of article. Fill transaxle to proper capacity. Check and adjust throttle cable.


  1. Apply multipurpose grease to center hub of torque converter and pilot hole in crankshaft. Install one guide pin in threaded mounting pad of torque converter to aid in aligning torque converter.
  2. Torque converter is correctly installed if torque converter drive lugs are at least .53" (13 mm) below engine mating surface. See Figure.
  3. To complete installation of transaxle, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW axle shaft snap ring. Tighten torque converter bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table at end of article. Fill transaxle to proper fluid capacity. Check and adjust throttle cable. Inspect front wheel alignment.


  1. Apply multipurpose grease to center hub of torque converter and pilot hole in crankshaft. Install one guide pin in threaded mounting pad of torque converter to aid in aligning torque converter.
  2. Torque converter is correctly installed if torque converter drive lugs are at least .79" (20 mm) below engine mating surface on 2.4L models, or .71" (18 mm) on 3.0L models. See Figure.
  3. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation of transmission. Tighten torque converter bolts to specification. See the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table. Fill transmission and transfer case (if applicable) to proper capacity. Check and adjust throttle cable.
