Headlight/Dimmer Switch (Tracker)
- Headlight switch acts only as grounding switch for headlight circuits. Switch ground connection is behind left instrument panel, on support post above ECM. Ensure left and right headlight fuses, located in fuse block under left instrument panel, are good.
- To test dimmer switch, turn on headlights (low-beam position). Push dimmer switch stalk forward to turn on high beams. If high beams do not go on, leave switch in this position and go to step 4). If high beams come on, go to next step.
- Pull dimmer switch stalk backward to operate high-beam passing/flash position. If lights do not function in this position, replace combination switch.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect combination switch harness 20-terminal connector located behind instrument panel, near steering column. Check resistance between Red wire and Black wire terminals of switch connector. If resistance is more than 0.3 ohm, replace combination switch. If resistance is less than 0.3 ohm, switch is okay. Repair open in Red wire circuit to headlights. See appropriate chassis wiring diagram in the WIRING DIAGRAMS section.
- To test headlight switch, disconnect negative battery cable and turn headlight switch on (low-beam position). Check resistance between switch connector Red/White wire terminal and ground. If meter reading is more than 0.3 ohm, replace switch. If meter reading is less than 0.3 ohm, switch is okay.
- Place switch in high-beam position. Check resistance between switch connector Red wire terminal and ground. If resistance is more than 0.3 ohm, replace switch. If resistance is less than 0.3 ohm, switch is good.
