Steering Wheel & Horn Pad: Installation

  1. Coat steering wheel slip ring contact surfaces with dielectric grease. Align reference marks made during removal, and install steering wheel. Install retaining nut on shaft. Tighten retaining nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  2. Connect horn wires and install contact plate. Ensure wires run through center of plate, not underneath it. Install horn switch/center pad assembly on contact plate. Activate SIR system (convertible). See AIR BAG PRECAUTIONS  . Connect negative battery cable.

  1. Coat steering wheel slip ring contact surfaces with dielectric grease. Align reference marks made during removal. Install steering wheel and retaining nut on shaft.
  2. Tighten retaining nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table. Connect horn switch wire connectors. Install horn button/center pad assembly to steering wheel.
WARNING: Before proceeding, see AIR BAG PRECAUTIONS  at beginning of article.


  1. Coat steering wheel slip ring contact surfaces with dielectric grease. Align reference marks made during removal, and install steering wheel and retaining nut onto shaft. Tighten retaining nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  2. Connect wire connectors and install SIR module/center pad assembly to steering wheel. Reconnect Orange 3-way connector at base of steering column. See AIR BAG PRECAUTIONS  .


  1. Connect horn wire from steering wheel to contact plate. Install contact plate and rear cover to steering wheel. Coat steering wheel slip ring contact surfaces with dielectric grease. Align reference marks made during removal. Install steering wheel and retaining nut on shaft.
  2. Tighten retaining nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table. Install horn button/center pad assembly to steering wheel contact plate.
