Removal (Prizm)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right lower engine cover. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove crankshaft pulley. See Fig 1 .
  2. Remove valve cover and windshield washer reservoir. Using Support Fixture (J028467-A), support engine. Remove through bolt at engine mount located near timing belt cover.
  3. Remove transaxle mounts-to-crossmember nuts. Raise engine slightly. Remove water pump pulley. Lower engine. Remove timing belt covers. If necessary, remove A/C compressor with hoses attached.
  4. Remove timing belt guide. Loosen idler pulley bolt. Move idler pulley away from timing belt and temporarily tighten idler pulley bolt. Remove timing belt.
    CAUTION: If timing belt is to be reused, mark direction of timing belt rotation and place reference marks on timing belt and sprockets for installation reference.
  5. If camshaft sprocket is to be removed, install wrench on hexagonal area of camshaft and hold camshaft. Remove retaining bolt and camshaft sprocket. If necessary, remove crankshaft sprocket.
